We are offering an online course that discusses how we can address the question on “What does Gender got to do with Physics?”, based on a collaboration between Stockholm and Lund Universities, supported by NordForsk. We welcome all interested students and personnel in Scandinavia (and beyond), to participate in one of two ways: • Either as a credit-giving, academic course of 7.5 ECTS, • or as a set of workshops, without getting academic credits. Both forms will be offered as a set of joint online events, starting in mid-February (date will be confirmed in January) and continue over the whole spring semester of 2024. There will be around eight workshops in total. More information is available on the homepage https://canvas.education.lu.se/courses/20692 . Here you will find information about the course, including on how to apply/register for both the credit-giving (7.5 ECTS) course and the workshop series. The deadline to apply for the credit-giving course is February 1st, 2024! The course will address several questions and topics, including: Why is it that physics, which is considered objective and not affected by who is doing the research, teaching, and learning, is so dominated by men among its practitioners? Why do some groups of people select not to come to physics – or to leave the area? Could the explanation be found in the culture of our labs and institutes? Or is it deeper – in the subject and how it is (re)presented? How do we make physics more welcoming for a larger part of the population? Welcome to apply/register and please continue to spread the information on this course! We still lack a university-wide coherent policy on these matters, nor do we have established guidelines at the department. This matter will be discussed in the relevant bodies such that we can formulate a policy for the department. Until this process is finalised the following interim rules apply specifically to theses: - it is permitted to use AI-systems to improve the language of a thesis. - if this has been done it is imperative to state in the thesis that this has been done, and also list what software has been used and what instructions were issued. Failing to do so will result in the thesis being graded "fail". - it is the responsibility of the student to verify that the external software has only made changes motivated by spelling and grammar. We note that it can be difficult to restrict the software to modifications of language only. The examination of a thesis where AI has been used to improve the language will therefore most likely be scrutinised extra carefully to ensure that the student is the originator of the scientific content. With their superior understanding of nuclear and particle physics, they put their most brilliant scientists to work. Their experiments lead them to a set of fundamental properties characterizing the new force and an initial understanding akin to Newtonian gravity. We will follow several groups of alien scientists on their journey to describe the new phenomenon in terms of the theoretical framework familiar to them, culminating in the prediction of a new particle, the graviton, as the mediator of this force. This journey not only guides them to Einstein's theory of general relativity but also nudges them beyond. Message-ID: <70cb7d72-e110-45ee-bb3c-d59b300ee957@fysik.su.se> Hi all, This is a call to make your voice and those of your fellow PhD students heard! As a PhD student at Fysikum you can take part in important committees in Fysikum, the faculty and the university as a PhD student representative. Being a PhD student representative means attending meetings of that committee, voicing your opinions and, if relevant, reporting back to the PhD council board. It is also a change to learn more about the decision making process at the university/faculty/department and a great addition to your CV. Moreover, your time is rewarded with an extension of your employment contract, ensuring no research time is lost. At a committee meeting on February 20th, the election for PhD representatives for committees of the natural science faculty and the university is held. There are many open spots, so if you put your name forward, you're likely to get picked. Being on a committee doesn't take much work; you should just attend the meetings. It is important to have representation for PhD students in the committees and you get well compensated for your time. Attached, you can find a list of the committees for which we can elect people and a short description of the work they do. Please note that some committees hold their proceedings in Swedish. More information about the prolongation and general structure of the university, faculty and department can also be found in the attached slides. If you are interested or have questions, you can reply to this email latest *February 19th* or talk to any of the of the PhD council board members; Gandharva Appagere, Roger Cattaneo, Lukas Rodland, Maddalena Bin, Nadia Dachlythra, Tomas Palmqvist, Aliki Litsa, Pranay Navak and Ellen Riefel. Join us on Friday the 23rd of February at 16:00 for delicious Swedish pastries and an interesting talk by Seán Brennan, a postdoc at the astronomy department, about early supernova activity. We're looking for someone to join the ScientiFika organisation committee! Reply to this message if you're interested or would like more information. Deadline: March 15. Seán Brennan Early Warning Signs: Precursor Activity Preceding Supernova Core-collapse supernovae are generally observed after the massive star has been destroyed, with information about the progenitor star inferred indirectly from the appearance and evolution of the supernova. Over the last decade, researchers have identified energetic activity at the locations of supernova explosions in the years leading up to core collapse in historical archives. These events are typically attributed to the massive progenitor star undergoing some form of activity via currently unknown mechanisms. One challenge when observing these precursor events is the uncertainty surrounding when or if the actual supernova explosion will occur. This uncertainty often makes us hesitant to allocate valuable telescope time. In this talk, I will present a growing sample of objects that demonstrate that some massive stars exhibit variability weeks to months before their final supernova. Through this work, we may be able to obtain advance warning of an impending supernova, allowing for high-reward observations and, to some extent, the ability to predict the final death of a massive star. In order for you to not miss out on any important information, please make sure that your Athena alerts are switched on. That way you'll get an e-mail whenever something is added to the course. On the course overview page, you'll find announcements and a calendar showing upcoming events. Under Plans and Resources, there are, well... resources. One thing already posted under Announcements is a report from the distance teaching survey that many of you filled out in October. Thank you so much for contributing, we hope you'll find the summary interesting! Lastly, we encourage you to use the Athena page as a forum for any pedagogical queries or ideas, big or small, that you would like to discuss with colleagues. One request that came up in the distance teaching survey was some kind of forum like that, so let's try it out! Have a nice weekend everyone! The department for Astronomy is organizing a PhD course on Radiative Transfer Across Disciplines (5 hp), which might also be of interest for PhD students in Physics. An email discussing the contents of the course that has recently been circulated to pre-registered students on the course follows below. If you are interested in taking the course, contact Anders Jerkstrand at "anders.jerkstrand at astro.su.se". ‐‐---------------- Hi all, Welcome to the PhD course “Radiative Transfer Across Disciplines”, to be held in LP2 this spring, starting March 26. I am coordinating the course, which will be taught by myself, Karin Lind, Jorrit Leenarts, Evan O’Connor, Jaime de la Cruz Rodriguez, and Garrelt Mellema. We are excited to have so many of you signed up already and interested in the course! Most important news first : the course will award 5hp, instead of the preliminarily planned 4hp. An Athena page is under construction, and you should all now have been added to this. You can now there see the dates for the planned lectures and computer labs. Syllabus and more detailed information about the contents are soon forthcoming. The overall structure of the course will be as follows: Week 1 (March 25-29): Introduction (Anders) One week break (Easter) Week 2 (April 8-12) : Modelling spectral lines in the sun (Jaime) Week 3 (April 15-19) : NLTE line formation in stellar atmospheres (Karin) Week 4 (April 22-26) : Radiative transfer in MHD simulations of stellar atmospheres (Jorrit) Week 5 (April 29-May 3) : Neutrino physics and radiative transfer (Evan) One week break Week 6 (May 13-17) : Modelling light curves and spectra of explosive transients (Anders) One week break Week 7 (May 27-31) : Radiative transfer for H II regions on galactic and intergalactic scales (Garrelt) The purpose of the course is to give you exposure and hands-on experience with state-of-the-art radiative transfer techniques and tools used in various fields at the astrophysics research fore-front. Hopefully, ideas for cross-discipline developments will arise. Apart from the introduction week, the other 6 blocks (weeks 2-7) will consist of two lectures, followed by a computer lab (2-3h). Examination will be based on passing the computer labs - it is up to each block teacher whether this is an on-the-spot examination, or via a report hand-in. There is no final exam, oral of written, in the course. The teachers will provide lecture notes. More detailed information will come before the course starts. Should you have any questions please let me know - for now, make sure to reserve the course dates in your calanders. I have an initial collection of these, plus a first set of ideas what could be changed, and will talk to Bo about these at some point. Anything that he cannot change by himself, I plan to take up with KUF. Since the initial discussion does not include all of us, I wanted to collect your opinions: Do you see other problems that we have missed? Do you have other ideas for solutions? Do you disagree and think the course should stay as it is? Let me know in a reply here, by *next Wednesday, the 3rd of April*. Problems: 1. Too few colloquia overall, in particular not sufficiently regular. This is definitely the biggest issue. (more than once, I have missed a series of multiple colloquia while travelling for a few weeks, and then came back to Stockholm and no colloquia were offered for a long time) * This leads to avoidable complications with many people asking for zoom options. * This also extends to the regularity at which each of the topics is offered. 2. Regularity of pre-meetings and post-meetings: There usually are two doodles per colloquium. Sometimes at the time of the colloquium, the post-meeting date is not fixed yet. 3. Unclear intentions for the post-meeting. Recently a professor started the meeting with "so what do we do in these post-meetings?" Ideas to address these points: * To address 1.: o Fix a lower bound to the frequency of colloquia. For example "one colloquium every two weeks" seemed reasonable. This also solves the zoom questions, because missing a colloquium is no longer a big problem. o If there are no talks in that time frame, choose a fitting one from the Albanova colloquia video archive. o If no professor wants to supervise the colloquia in a given week: let an advanced PhD student do it. + Here we could even ask Christophe if the department could give them some teaching hours, but honestly I think we would also do it without that. o Fix a target number of each topics per year or per semester. For example, "three colloquia of each topic per year". * To address 2.: o At the very least both meetings and all deadlines should be fixed before the colloquium. o We could even standardise the times for the pre-/post-meetings, and arrange our schedules around that. o If this is hard to do because of teaching obligations etc., one could fix it as a lunch seminar. The meetings are usually quite informal, so eating while discussing a topic should be feasible. * For point 3. we have no clear solutions. Perhaps the professors just need a nudge to think about what to do in post-meetings in advance? o Related: Some of the professors have a hard time using Athena. There should be a document to help them, or an annual meeting for this, like the teaching meeting for us PhD students. One overarching point I see is that we think there could be more responsibility on the PhD students to make this course flow better. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. All the best and a happy Easter break to you, Lukas -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... These interactions span from inherently goal or task based to socially oriented. As such, people have different expectations and beliefs about how robots should behave during their interactions with humans. The field of human-robot interaction therefore focuses on understanding how features such as the robot’s appearance and behaviour influence people’s attitudes and behaviours towards these (social) robots. Join us on Friday the 19th of April at 16:00 for delicious Swedish pastries and an interesting talk by Guilherme Franzmann. The topic is still in a quantum superposition, find out what it will be on Friday! Guilherme Franzmann |Title's wavefunction> = |A tale of Emergence> + |Scientific Realism> Meta-abstract: As I'm filling in this week's spot on short notice, the talk's title and content remain on a mental superposition between two states: a talk about emergence focussing both on spacetime emergence and the emergence of the classical world, and a talk about what is real from a scientific realist perspective. If we are lucky enough, the collapse of the talk's mental wavefunction will happen due to a measurement on a different basis, and a superposition of both topics will be discussed! Whatever happens, the plan is to make our heads spin! Place: NORDITA Floor 6 - Fika area (in-person only). Address: AlbaNova University Center, Hannes Alfvéns väg 12 www.scientifika.se We're looking forward to seeing you! Join us on Friday the 26th of April at 16:00 for delicious Swedish pastries and an interesting talk by Priscila Pessi about supernova explosions. Priscila Pessi What makes the dead rise (or, what powers the light curves of the most luminous supernovae?) Supernovae result from the explosive death of massive stars. If the progenitor star retained at least some of its outermost hydrogen layers before explosion, the spectra of the supernova will show hydrogen lines. These supernovae are classified as Type II. Through the spectral evolution of a Type II supernova, we can infer the structure of the progenitor star. The light curve, produced by the supernova's brightness variation over time, helps us understand the energetics of the explosion. Typical theoretical models propose that Type II supernova light curves are powered by hydrogen recombination and heating from radioactive decay of Nickel-56. However, there exist some atypical Type II supernovae whose spectral and light curve characteristics can not be explained by such a model alone, suggesting the need for alternative power sources. In this talk I will present Type II supernovae (SNe II) that show atypically bright light curves, classified as "LSNe II" and "SLSNe II". I will explain why we keep adding letters at the beginning of the SN II name, and I will show which observables can help elucidate the physical mechanism that powers these events. Sebastian Genas Let’s talk about the weather, babe Discussing the weather has somehow become a symbol of a topic to resort to when conversation runs dry. Which is a shame, because weather is so much more than just small talk - it's integral to renewable energy production. In this talk, I aim to put weather conversations in a new light. As a data scientist at an energy-tech company, I will share insights and anecdotes from within the energy sector. How did Europe survive the energy crisis? And how can new AI-based weather models be used for renewables forecasting? Hopefully, this will give you some weather-related conversation starters that can follow or replace the usual ”Cold outside today, isn’t it?” Place: NORDITA Floor 6 - Fika area (in-person only).
