In this talk, I will introduce the basic ideas to study fluctuations and rare events in science through the lens of large deviation theory. I will first present some catastrophic (and non) examples of rare events and will then slowly introduce the theory to
study them (not much math, I promise!). After reviewing some historical contributions to the theory I will show how it is being used today in equilibrium and nonequilibrium physics showing, at last, a way to reinterpret the time arrow in the macroscopic world.</span></font></font></font><font face="Liberation Serif, serif"><font style="font-size:14pt" size="4"><br>
