There<br class="">are purely observational proofs that at least a few of them are accreting neutron stars, or stellar mass<br class="">black holes. However, one cannot say that all ULXs are connected with compact objects with mases<br class="">not in excess of 100 solar masses. The intermediate mass black holes may still be needed. There is<br class="">no convincing theoretical model explaining how an acceting system may collimate radiation to<br class="">highly hyper-Eddington luminosities. I will discuss mostly my most recent papers (with Lasota,<br class="">Narayan and Sądowski) devoted to these unsolved issues.
