One attractive scenario involves a variable central engine that produces shocks below the GRB photosphere. I will discuss recent work regarding the radiation produced by such "deep shocks." In particular, we've shown that the simplest shock scenario produces a smoothly broken power law spectrum with an exponential cut-off at high energies.
