Call for participation - BioMedSim'2005

BioMedSim'2005
The Fourth International Conference on
Simulation in Medicine, Biology and Biomedical Engineering,
Linköping, Sweden.
May 26-27, 2005

http://www.ida.liu.se/conferences/biomedsim05/

Preliminary conference program, travel information and registration is
available at the conference website

Note:
The conference is co-organized at the same site with
the SimSafe'2005 conference (May 30-31) on safety and security
usage and issues of modeling and simulation,
including safety of society, transportation, engineering, biomedical
equipment, etc.

Between the conferences is a 2-day hands-on course in Object-Oriented
modeling
and simulation using Modelica (May 28-29), partly based on the book
"Principles of Object Oriented Modelica and Simulation with Modelica 2.1",
Wiley-IEEE Press, 2004, by Peter Fritzson.

Future challenges for distributed computing and biology :The case of
grid computing and stochastic distributed simulation

by David Hill - Computer Science and Modeling Laboratory, Blaise Pascal
University, France

The purpose of this keynote is to present the new challenges for
distributed stochatic simulation in biology. The first part will give a
short presentation dealing with the differences between : Grid
Computing, Internet Computing, Peer-To-Peer, Cluster Computing, Meta
Computing and Parasitic computing. Then the focus will be given to grid
computing, which could be considered as distributed computing taken to
the next evolutionary stage. We will see what grid computing can do, the
concepts of grid computing, the current European status of Grid
computing and what will be possible in the near future. We will also
state what a grid cannot do.A second part will deal will the
distribution of stochastic simulations and the distribution of
simulation experiments (whether stochastic or not). The different
techniques in use to distribute random numbers will be presented as well
as future research directions. Optimization techniques will be exposed
and real applications on biology ecological modelling and medical
projects will be presented to help understanding the impact of grid
computing.

Integration: a Key Word and Challenge in Water Quality Modeling.

by Peter Vanrolleghem - Department of Applied Mathematics, Biometrics
and Process ControlGhent University, Belgium

Water is a precious good that is affected by many processes. When
looking at river ecosystem health, as increasingly required by EU
legislation and public interest, an integrated view on this large scale,
complex system is required. Many scientific disciplines must work
together and deal with many different types of models and data sets in a
variety of ways. The presentation will highlight some of the modelling
and simulation tools that support the decision support in this important
environmental system.

About Vårdnäs, Linköping, Sweden

The conference site Vårdnäs is beautifully situated at a lake
just south of Linköping. Swimming, canoeing, and hiking is available
right at the site. The Lake district south of Linköping is one of the most
beautiful areas in this part of Sweden. Linköping also features
Linköping university with the university hospital, the Saab aerospace
company, one of Europes largest aircraft museums, the Old Linköping
(Gamla Linköping)
town area with many small shops, the Berg lock staircase of
Göta Canal (10 km), the historic city of Vadstena with the Gustaf Wasa
castle (50km), the Baltic Sea with the St Anna Archipelago (50-100 km).

Linköping is served by four airports: Linköping airport (5 km) or Norrköping
airport (50km by F-taxi) usually reached via Copenhagen,
the Stockholm-Skavsta airport (100 km by bus) served by the low-fare
Ryan Air, and the Stockholm-Arlanda airport (270 km by hourly trains).
A low-price shuttle between Vårdnäs and Linköping railway station or
airport is
available, but should preferrably be ordered in advance.
