FOUR STAFF SCIENTISTS (OPEN RANK) IN THE BIODATA ANALYTICS UNIT OF THRIVING NATURE PROFILING ACTION

The BioData Analytics Unit is aimed to serve the research community of this profiling area at University of Helsinki and will initially consist of three data analysts and a data and server manager (staff scientists). The positions are initially for five years with a possibility for extension.

We are seeking for outstanding applicants with a solid track record including a PhD or equivalent degree or practical work experience in statistics and/or bioinformatics, and especially their application to large biological data sets. The staff scientists will take part in research projects in the life science area, both by applying state-of-the-art statistical and bioinformatics methods to biological data sets and taking part to the development of new methodology with special emphasis on modern big data applications. The BioData Analytics unit serves the HiLife scientists and typical data analysis tasks include, but are not restricted to, genome, ecological, community, and phenotyping data. Salary range for the staff-scientist position will be 3200-4200 €/month. There will be a 6-month probation for the positions.

The BioData Analytics Unit will be overseen by a board formed by PIs of Viikki Campus and their supervisor will be the bioinformatics Prof. Ville Mustonen. The initial funding for the unit comes from PROFI 5 but the unit will become self-sufficient for funding through participation in competitive calls and cost recovery by the end of PROFI5. The unit is expected to enlarge significantly after its establishment during this PROFI5 action due to increased demand for and use of the methods the unit provides, and links with the current sequencing services.

Support in curation of further big data generated in Thriving Nature will be one of the roles of the new BioData Analytics Unit, and will build on current initiatives by UH and the Ministry of Education who are using ecological data already generated by Thriving Nature PIs as a pilot for a new long-term data storage platform (www.digitalpreservation.fi<http://www.digitalpreservation.fi/>).
