Please find the details of the position here inline below. Sincere greetings from Örebro! Dirk Subject: *Postdoctoral researcher in Mathematical/Computational Systems Biology (Oerebro, Sweden, 2-3 years)* Text: The postdoctoral researcher will build and investigate mathematical and mechanistic models of inflammatory processes on various scales, based on dynamical data produced from in vitro models and connected to large-scale clinical data and OMICs data. The project is transdisciplinary and includes business partners in the Life Science/Pharmaceutical industry. This project is hosted by the Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Center (iRiSC) at Örebro University, which, together with the Functional Bioinformatics group, will be the main affiliation for the position. Örebro University is one of the most expansive universities in Sweden, and was most recently placed as number 75 when Times Higher Education ranked the young universities in the world, and as number 30 when looking at the citation rate per se. Inflammation constitutes a critical component of many common diseases, such as cancer, mental illness, autoimmune disease, metabolic diseases, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Current research reveals a profound lack of a mechanistic understanding of different forms of inflammation, and how these constitute specific or general interactions with common diseases. The current position is part of a larger project (X-HiDE) aimed at using a systems biology approach to investigate inflammatory mechanisms. More information can be found at www.oru.se/X-HiDE More information about Örebro University can be found at www.oru.se/english The current position constitutes a vital part in establishing a new attractive platform for systems biology, which offers some unique possibilities for the postdoc. The project X-HiDE has already secured long-term and substantial funding - intended to found a Center of Excellence for research in inflammatory mechanisms. The building of a new systems biology group within X-HiDE also involves new senior staff, and such more senior positions will open up in the future; making X-HiDE an attractive place for a long-term career in the field of mathematical and mechanistic modelling. Most important, X-HiDE has an attractive network of collaboration partners with existing systems biology environments, involving academic partners located at, e.g. Linköping University, Sweden, and at Rostock University, Germany, but also major industrial partners, e.g. AstraZeneca in Gothenburg and Wolfram MathCore in Linköping. As part of the project, the position offers the possibility and is encouraged to spend shorter or longer times at any of these sites. The position is a full-time position for a fixed term of two years, with the possibility of applying for an additional third year. The salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. Starting date is flexible (February 2021 is the ideal date). Project: Gene networks perform continuous, semi-parallel, information processing, while being robust to noise. Understanding how this is achieved remains a key question in Life Sciences. This project will study information propagation in bacterial Gene Networks. We will use methods from Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Signal Processing, and Network and Information Sciences, and we will be supported by Single-Cell and Omics laboratory data produced in-house. Understanding how information flows between genes should provide insights into how to produce novel antibiotics and synthetic genetic circuits for bioindustrial processes.
