*Abstract*
In this presentation, I will build on analysis presented in Francis and 
Vavrus (GRL, 2012) in which mechanisms were proposed and demonstrated 
that link enhanced warming in the Arctic (Arctic amplification) during 
recent decades with changes in mid-latitude weather patterns. A flurry 
of new studies provide additional evidence for linkages that differ by 
season and region, and new metrics suggest that Arctic amplification is 
leading to more amplified jet-stream patterns and blocking. Prolonged 
weather conditions are often associated with extreme weather, such as 
droughts, cold spells, heat waves, and some flooding events, which have 
become more frequent in recent years. Recent progress is illuminating 
but also leads to new questions and unknowns, which I will discuss.
