The Bolin Centre is a multi-disciplinary consortium of over 350 scientists in Sweden that conducts research and graduate education related to the Earth´s climate.

Learning from the past: A slowdown of the Atlantic overturning system may cause hot European summers
Record-breaking cold North Atlantic Ocean temperatures in recent years reflect a notable slowdown of the Atlantic overturning system and have been linked to major European heat waves. Results from new high-resolution climate simulations for the late-glacial confirm that a strong cooling of the North Atlantic Ocean caused unusually warm European summers ~12,000 years ago. As today, the key mechanism behind this "cold-ocean-warm-summer" feedback is intensified atmospheric blocking by persistent high-pressure centers over Europe.

The study published in Nature Communications presents results from an ongoing cooperation within the Bolin Centre between Geological Sciences at Stockholm University and the Linné FLOW Centre at KTH Mechanics.
