Niklas Werner will present his master thesis on 1 June at 10.00, room Y23.

Title: The impact of the East African uplift on Miocene ecosystems — Insights from earth system model simulations

Short introduction: The onset of early homonid evolution in the Late Miocene has been linked to the transition from a forest ecosystem to vast open grasslands in Central and East Africa. These changes in the composition of ecosystems were triggered by a major reorganisation of the African hydroclimate as the Miocene transitioned into the Pliocene. Various studies suggest a key role of the uplift of the East African Ethiopian Highland in altering the regional climate, contributing to the transition towards a grassland-dominated landscape and the aridification of East Africa. This thesis uses the earth system model EC-Earth3-veg, adopts the reconstructed paleo-topography for the East African uplift and simulates the temporal evolution of the Miocene ecosystem. The simulated results will be presented.
