Dear PhD student!

This is to remind you to sign up for the physics event on Thursday, September 24th (see original invitation below). I strongly recommend both the magnetism seminar and the presentation by Savantic, so do sign up! The event is highly relevant for all of you.

The direct link to the web form through which to sign up is https://simplesignup.se/private_event/64831/586a101ae1
and the last day to register is Tuesday, September 22nd.

Best regards /Emma

Abstract: Everything you always wanted to know about magnetism, but were afraid to ask

What is magnetism? Why do magnets attract or repel each other, and why do they stick to some materials but not others? And why did Richard Feynman once tell a journalist: "I am not going to be able to give you an answer to why magnets attract each other"? In this talk, I will attempt to give a hint of an answer to these fundamental questions to physics students and alumni that have a basic understanding of the laws of physics. We will go through a few everyday examples of magnetism, and we will see how the description of very familiar phenomena can very quickly turn into a discussion of fundamental physical concepts. We will try to debunk some of the myths of magnetism that naturally arise when "invisible" forces seem to be involved. Finally, I will give a taste of what the modern research in magnetism is about, and what is the fundamental problem in magnetism that scientists are currently tackling.

?Dear PhD student!

You are most welcome to an exciting evening at AlbaNova, which I hope that most of you will be able to attend. Don't miss this!

When?

Thursday, September 24, 6 pm - 7.30 pm

What?

- Stefano Bonetti, researcher at Fysikum, will give a talk about everything you always wanted to know about magnetism (se abstract at the bottom of this page)

- Savantic - a company that does research within e.g. image analysis and simulations, and that has a strong tradition of employing physics PhD's - present themselves and what you can do at their workplace

- We serve light foods and drinks

How do I sign up for this event?
- You sign up by filling in a simple web form that is accessible via "Fysikums alumngrupp" at SU Alumni (www.su.se/alumn). If you are not already registered at SU alumni, please do so using your SU account at www.su.se/alumn in order to sign up for the event. (I strongly recommend you to register even if you are not interested in attending this particular event - as a member you will get more offers like this related to physics and your career.) We need your answer at the latest on September 22.

If you have any questions regarding the event or the registration at SU Alumni, feel free to contact me. Hope to see you on the 24th!

Best regards /Emma, responsible for the Fysikum alumni network
