It is sketched, how one can understand intuively, and formulate in terms of symmetries, (bimetric) gravity, space, time and matter. ****************** Talk by Andrea Addazi: The fate of Schwarzschild-de Sitter Black Holes in $f(R)$ gravity Abstract The phenomenon of anti evaporating instability in primordial black holes in extended theories of gravity will be presented, complemented by an introduction to the general idea of Extended theories of gravity and a discussion about the implication for massive gravity.? Pastries will be served!!! :) Enjoy! Martina and Jon -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm going to try to summarize the main points. Please jump in if I missed something: * We would love to see more participation from the astronomy department. Of course such a thing has to evolve naturally, but we should try to entice the astronomers by having talks and discussions that they think are interesting. * We are going to stick with the biweekly Wednesday 13:15 time slot. However, we agreed that 16:00 was a nice time slot if we wanted to organize "brain storming sessions" with beer. * Having talks outside was fun, but its difficult to implement. Yesterday, the sun was actually a bit too strong. Who da thunk it... We talked about a few options for the June 15 meeting, the last meeting before mid-summer vacation. Martina Gerbino has nominally agreed to give a talk. We are, however, also interested in hearing more about primordial black holes from Florian Kühnel. We also discussed whether we should organize a brain storming session. Edvard Mörtsell suggested that we organize the session around a common enemy, namely dust. As we know, dust causes issues for people looking at supernovae, CMB, and a number of other astrophysical phenomena. We wanted to set up some type of system for voting on future brain storming sessions, talks, and paper discussions. Unfortunately, an online discussion forum and voting system that is universally liked does not exist. Some people don't like facebook, other's don't like google, etc. Therefore, people have to be willing to make compromises for things to work well. I've created an OKC C&G Slack team. For those of you who haven't heard of Slack, its an online service that many science teams are using to organize their work. It's not without flaws, but many people seem to really like this system. One can sign up, create teams, and use their basic services for free. Apparently the Icecube collaboration uses Slack! You can sign up for our OKC C&G working group Slack channel using your fysik.su.se, astro.su.se, or kth.se e-mail address. If you prefer to sign up with a different e-mail address you're going to have to send me an e-mail so that I can send you an invitation. You can sign up and join our team by following this link and setting up your account: https://okccng.slack.com/x-47598936295-47619082224/signup I hope this works well! Motivated by gravity wave efforts, fundamental questions and holographic applications, these efforts have revealed both intriguing simplicity and new highly complex phenomena. He is Purnendu Karmakar currently a PhD student at the Department of Physics in Padova working with Sabino Matarrese. He is sitting in Nordita east at ground floor in the room for programs' participants and will stay until 4th November in case you are interested to talk to him. He will also give a talk next Thursday (3rd November) at the TWG meeting (13:15 to 15) about mimetic dark matter. Please find below further information. Cheers, Martina and Jon ------------------------------------------------------- Title: `Constructing and exploring alternative theories of gravity: the mimetic scenario and beyond' Speaker: Purnendu Karmakar, Department of Physics and Astronomy 'G. Galilei', University of Padova, Italy Abstract: Despite its many successes of Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM), Lambda (dark energy) introduces the cosmological constant and fine-tuning problems, and cold dark matter has never been directly observed either on earth or in space. These indicative of a crisis motivate us to introduce the novel class of modified gravity theory, called ``generalized mimetic gravity theory'', which can explain and `mimic' the complete evolution of the universe, including the effects of radiation, dark matter, and dark energy. The generalized mimetic gravity models arise in full generality by a non-invertible disformal transformation of very general scalar-tensor theories of gravity (including, e.g., Horndeski models and beyond Horndeski), which are a generalization of the so-called `mimetic' dark matter theory recently introduced by Chamsedinne and Mukhanov. The general mimetic scalar-tensor theory has the same number of derivatives in the equations of motion as the original scalar-tensor theory. Sound speed of mimetic - Horndeski and beyond will also be discussed. So far, no evidence against the existing laws of physics has been found. I shall wind up the seminar with some applications and the future openings of mimetic theories of gravity. Cheers, Martina -------------------------------------------------------- Title: Modeling the interstellar medium of high redshift galaxies Venue: Nordita South Seminar Room Time: 2nd November 13:30 Abstract: In the last few years, the advent of ALMA, made it possible the detection of far-infrared (FIR) metal and molecular cooling lines from z>6 galaxies. These lines, represent a powerful tool to shed light on the physical properties of the cold interstellar medium in the first galaxies. In this talk I will provide an overview regarding the semi-analytical models that I developed to describe the relative abundance of various gas phases in the ISM of the first galaxies. The models include a full treatment of the effects of stellar far-ultraviolet photons on the structure, chemistry, and thermal balance of the ISM. Once coupled to high-resolution cosmological simulations, they allowed to successfully interpret various ALMA detections from galaxies at z>6, putting constraints on their metallicity, and on the feedback of star formation on molecular gas. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... She is very well known for her work on high redshift galaxies. Please note the room (FB55) and the time (10:00)! Title: Low Mass Galaxies and their Gas at the Peak Epoch of Star Formation Wednesday 30 November 2016 from 10:00 to 11:00 at FB55 Speaker: Dawn Erb (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) Abstract: Because faint, low mass galaxies are numerous at high redshifts, their impact on the Universe is expected to be significant. They may host a substantial fraction of the Universe's star formation, provide many of the energetic photons needed to reionize the intergalactic medium, and affect their surroundings via powerful, starburst-driven galactic outflows. Because of their faintness, however, the properties of these galaxies are difficult to determine. I will discuss a variety of observations aimed at characterizing the physical conditions in low mass galaxies during the peak epoch of star formation, when the Universe was ~20% of its current age, with particular emphasis on the study of galactic outflows in faint galaxies. Please let me know if you find anything missing or incorrect. Emily The Cosmology and Gravitation working group is composed of researchers working across a wide range of areas. Group members are analyzing data from experiments that observe the cosmic microwave background, the physics of the early universe, the distribution of large scale cosmological structure, galaxies and the intergalactic medium. Theorists in the group are investigating evidence for both dark matter and dark energy, and their potential implications for general relativity. Computational theorists are working with simulations of cosmology-related phenomena, such as the reionization of the Universe and galaxy evolution. The Cosmology and Gravitation group has bi-weekly meetings with varying content. These include short presentations from group members or visitors and discussions of specific papers. The group leaders are Martina Gerbino, Jón Gudmundsson, Garrelt Mellema and Edvard Mörtsell.
