Invitation to the Workshop "New Mechanisms in the Evolution of
Phenotypic Diversity".

The year 2007 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Carl
Linnaeus, one of Uppsala's great scientists and naturalists, who
founded the modern field of systematics that illuminated the
beginning of the modern perspective on natural diversity. To honor
him, the Linnaeus Centre of Bioinformatics (Uppsala University and
the Swedish Agricultural University) is arranging a two-day workshop
on the role of novel regulatory mechanisms in the evolution of
phenotypic diversity and cellular differentiation. The workshop will
take place at the BMC (Lecture Hall B41) at Uppsala on October 18-19
2007.

The program for the workshop and more information may be found at:
http://www.lcb.uu.se/linnaeus_workshop/

The main topic of this workshop is the role of novel molecular
mechanisms, including ncRNA, imprinting, and mobile genetic elements
in the evolution of phenotypic variation and cellular
differentiation. One session will be dedicated to Systems Biology.
The workshop's goal is to bring together experimental, evolutionary
and computational perspectives, and opportunities for open discussion
will be encouraged.

An international program of invited speakers will review the state-of-
the-art in the fields and discuss the expanding view of the
intersections among these emergingly important mechanisms, the roles
they play in phenotypic diversity and cellular differentiation, and
opportunities for bioinformatics, computational biology and modelling
in their investigation.

Accepted speakers are:
Olivier Voinnet (IBMP, Strasbourgh, France)
Michel Georges (University of Liège, Belgium)
Rene Ketting (Netherlands Institute for Developmental Biology)
Anders Krogh (University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
Rebecca Oakey (King's College, London, U.K.)
Déborah Bourc’his (Paris University, France)
Jef Boeke (John Hopkins University, USA)
Wolfgang Nellen (Kassel University, Germany)
Ewan Birney (EMBL Outstation, Hinxton, U.K.)
Anne Ferguson Smith (University of Cambridge, U.K.)
Edwin Wang (McGill University Center for Bioinformatics, Montreal,
Canada)

Registration to attend the workshop is required, with a deadline of
September 30, 2007, http://www.lcb.uu.se/linnaeus_workshop/index.php?
page=re. Included in the registration are admission to the talks and
discussions, coffee breaks, and eventual hand-outs. There is no
registration fee for the workshop.

A PDF attachment flyer for this workshop is attached. We are thankful
if you can post and distribute this email and flyer to publicize the
workshop.

Sincerely yours,

for the organizing and program committees,
