Umeå University is now recruiting a Research Engineer in Bioinformatics

Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is one of Sweden's few
complete universities – the only in

northern Sweden. The university campus is promoting excellent
possibilities for interdisciplinary

research. Today, there is a strong international and multicultural
presence with students, teachers and

researchers from all over the world. The university has approximately
29,000 students.

The Medical Faculty comprises 13 Departments and 3 centers. It has
some 3,000 students and 650 Ph.D.

students. There are approximately 1,000 employees, half of which are
researchers.

The Swedish Research Council is investing € 8.5 million in a new
laboratory for molecular medicine at

Umeå University (MIMS). The aim of this new initiative is to
strengthen Swedish research and enhance

the dynamics in the field of molecular medicine, partly by promoting
career opportunities for young

scientists.

The laboratory will place its emphasis on the field of molecular
infection medicine as the Swedish node in

the Nordic partnership for Molecular Medicine that is being formed
together with the European Molecular

Biology Laboratory, EMBL, and the new Nordic nodes for molecular
medicine in Finland and Norway.

MIMS is established within the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research
(UCMR; www.ucmr.se) and is

affiliated with both the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of
Science and Technology and is closely

connected to Norrlands University Hospital. The researchers of UCMR
are active in the fields of

molecular and clinical microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, and
physics and the research groups

include a pronounced international profile with many guest researchers
and graduate students, as well as

faculty members, from other countries. The groups work in modern
laboratories with well-equipped

common facilities creating a framework for a creative and highly
interactive environment.

The employment is a two-year position at the Department of Clinical
Microbiology and will

be affiliated to MIMS.

Main responsibilities

• Half of the employment will consist of support for existing research
groups. For example:

o Teaching in bioinformatics

o To adapt software for specific bioinformatic applications

o To identify suitable methods for analyses

o Handling of data bases

o To perform bioinformatic analyses

• The other half of the employment will consist of applied research in
bioinformatics

Competence

• Ph.D. in Biological Sciences

• Experience of independent research

Meritorious qualifications

Experience of sequence analyses or microarray analyses and knowledge
in programming and

statistics.
