[Socbin] Postdoctoral position in Bergen (Computational Biology/Genomics, Lenhard group)

Boris Lenhard boris.lenhard at bccs.uib.no
Thu Mar 4 23:52:36 CET 2010

Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Biology

Deadline: March 30, 2009

A postdoctoral position (100 %) is available at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. The position is funded by the EU FP7 NeuroXsys project.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in bioinformatics/computational biology with background in molecular biology, medical genetics and/or comparative genomics, to join the computational biology research activities within the EU FP7 NeuroXsys project Genomic Regulatory Systems of Human X-linked neurological diseases.
About the project: The NeuroXsys project aims to generate long-range regulatory maps and models of the human X chromosome based on evolutionary conservation, with special attention to genes and regions implicated in X-linked neurological diseases. Vertebrate chromosomes are subdivided into domains of genomic regulatory blocks (GRBs); NeuroXsys wil map all GRBs on the X chromosome through bioinformatic approaches, identify gene regulatory sequences, and model their activity through transgenic reporter assays in the zebrafish juvenile and adult brain. NeuroXsys will seek to identify human disease mutations in neural gene regulatory elements: the implicated elements will be studied as regulators at single cell resolution in the zebrafish and mouse brain, defining expression patterns driven by the normal and mutant human regulatory DNA sequences. NeuroXsys will generate a regulatory map of a human chromosome, the first that will include long-range regulatory component to explain X-linked disease.
The successful candidate will be employed at the University of Bergen, Department of Clinical Medicine, and work in the research group of Boris Lenhard in close collaboration with other NeuroXsys research groups.
The University of Bergen (UiB) http://uib.no/info/english/ is a dynamic research university in a vibrant world heritage city with a high quality of living.
The Lenhard research group (http://lenhardgroup.genereg.net) is situated in the Computational Biology Unit (CBU) http://cbu.uib.no/ and is also affiliated with the Sars Centre for Marine Molecular Biology, a partner of EMBL. CBU has been established to conduct top-level European research in bioinformatics, and to serve functional genomics research in Norway with relevant training and services. CBU is part of Bergen Center for Computational Science (BCCS) and located together with the Department for Informatics, the Molecular Biology Department and the Sars Centre. BCCS owns and operates large-scale computing facilities that provide an excellent computational environment.
Requirements: Qualified candidates should hold a PhD in computational biology or related field and have a track record of research productivity. Good knowledge of genetics and molecular biology is essential, as well as proficiency in one major programming language (preferably Perl). Knowledge of applied statistics using R is a strong plus. Further requirements include good organizational and interpersonal skills, an ability to write up research for publication, and an ability to communicate in English. Applicants must have obtained their PhD within the past five years.
Appointment: The full-time post is fixed term for 24 months. The post can start immediately or as negotiated.
Salary: Salary will be paid in accordance with level 57 (code 1352/pay framework 24.1) on the government salary scale, following ordinary meriting regulations. Further increases in salary will be based on seniority in the position
Application: For further information see http://lenhardgroup.genereg.net/Vacancies/. For informal inquires write to Dr. Boris Lenhard (email: boris.lenhard at bccs.uib.no).
The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that at any given time apply to the position.
UiB is an equal opportunity employer. Women and candidates of different ethnic backgrounds are particular invited to apply for the position.
