The position is at the Department of Molecular Biology and within the Computational Life Science Cluster (CLiC) at Umeå University, Sweden

Job description: Development and use of bioinformatics tools in the study of targeting and regulation of chromatin associated factors in eukaryotes (mainly flies and humans). The work will be in close contact with leading researchers in experimental biology and the successful applicant is expected to take an active part in planning, analysis, evaluating and publishing of scientific projects.

Focus of the research group: In all higher organisms chromatin is the physiological template of the genetic information. Gene expression in animals and plants is an intricate interplay between transcription factors and a plethora of factors that targets and modifies the three dimensional structure of chromatin. Thanks to the rapid evolution of genome wide mapping techniques we now have access to vast amounts of data regarding transcription, transcription factors, chromatin modifications and remodelers. The problem is to make sense of all these data in order to understand how correct gene regulation is achieved in a eukaryotic cell as well as to establish links between chromatin and expression. We also need to understand how all the proteins that interact with chromatin are targeted to their sites of action. By developing bioinformatics approaches and combining those with genetics approaches and genome mapping of chromatin factors we hope to contribute to the understanding of the complex networks that control gene regulation in higher organisms.
