Karolinska Institutet invites applications for a *Postdoc in
mathematics/biostatistics/bioinformatics of Severe Malaria*

*Department*
Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology
*Area of responsibilities/description of the work*
We are looking for a highly motivated person with background in
mathematics/biostatistics/bioinformatics to join the malaria research
division. The project will be run by professor Mats Wahlgren in a dynamic
environment consisting of other research groups.

The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum undergoes antigenic variation to
establish persistent blood stage infections. The variant antigen, PfEMP1, is
expressed at the erythrocyte surface where it acts as a virulence adhesion
molecule bringing about severe malaria through accumulation of erythrocytes
in the micro-vasculature. We are investigating artificial Plasmodium
falciparum sequences that include virulence and erythrocyte binding
signatures to study how they interact with receptors and how they
cross-induce antibodies; see previous publications in PNAS 104, 15835, 2007,
J Exp Med, 201, 1853, 2005. Science, 293, 2098, 2001.

The work will include to identify of relevant sequences by
mathematical/bioinformatic tools.
*Qualifications*
To qualify the applicant must hold a degree or a foreign qualification
deemed equivalent in the field of mathematics/ biostatistics/
bioinformatics.

The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills and
ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Fluency in
English is a requirement.

Applicants who have completed their degrees no more than three years before
the last date for applications should be given priority. Candidates who have
completed their degree earlier than this should receive equal priority if
special grounds exist.

Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defense is
scheduled to take place within three months after the application deadline,
in which case verification from the Dissertation Committee or equivalent
body must be submitted with the application.

The position is available for 2 years with possible extension for 1-2 years.
The successful candidates should start at the latest September 1, 2011.
