Dear colleagues,

We are looking for an enthusiastic internship student with a computer science or bioinformatics background to design and implement a customized basic laboratory information management system (LIMS), see details below.

Please forward this to good candidates.

Cheers,
Carsten

We are looking for an enthusiastic internship student with a computer science or bioinformatics background to design and implement a customized basic laboratory information management system (LIMS) for a recently established clinical transcriptomics laboratory in the department of Biosciences and Nutrition at Karolinska Institutet (http://ki.se/bionut/daub/). The proposed LIMS system will consist of a user-friendly interface that allows for different views of data access, and a well-designed database back-end organizing various types of next-generation sequencing data samples, quality control reports, as well as sample processing and analysis workflow. The successful candidate will be involved in user requirement gathering, database design and implementation, as well as thorough testing and documentation of the finished product. Supervised by bioinformatics postdocs and the principal investigator, the student will earn valuable experience building an entire LIMS system from scratch and will gain better appreciation of how next-generation sequencing data is processed, managed and applied towards better understanding of gene expression and regulatory landscapes of human diseases.

Qualifications

- Must have strong programming background, a solid understanding of software development process, and good coding/documentation habits. The finished product should be easily extendable and maintainable by other personnel in the lab.
- Must have experience building/administrating relational database systems, or have taken a database design course with a good understanding of design principles and a strong interest in building a database from scratch.
- Must be familiar with open RDMS systems such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Familiarity with web interface building is desirable.
- Familiarity with next-generation sequencing data is an asset but not required.
- Must have a positive attitude, excellent communication skills, be a team player and fully fluent in spoken and written English

Start date: As soon as possible.
Duration: 6 months - 1 year. May be full time or part time.
Location: Department of Biosciences and Nutriotion (BioNut), Karolinska Institutet. Option available to work from remote locations.
Pay for this position will follow KI BioNut departmental guidelines.
