Assistant Professor in Membrane Protein Biochemistry
A 2-year assistant professor position in the field of membrane protein
biochemistry is available in The Membrane Protein Structural Biology Group
at the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The starting day of employment
will be according to agreement, but not later than the 1st of May 2015.

Information about the Department is available at http://bmi.ku.dk/english/

The Membrane Protein Structural Biology Group within the Department of
Biomedical Sciences works on structural and functional characterizing of
membrane proteins that are essential for human health and highly attractive
targets in the treatment of disease. The overarching aim is to reveal the
molecular principles and determinants of transport processes across
cellular membranes for these proteins. To this end, we use a number of
complementary techniques centered on X-ray crystallography to study
structure-function relationships.

*Job Description*
Understanding of the functions and mechanisms of fundamental processes in
the cell require structural information, which at the same time leads to
applied, biomedical and biotechnological research. The relevant projects
focus on structural and functional characterization of various membrane
proteins which are linked to severe disorders. Research will aim for a
detailed understanding of the structure, function, regulation and mechanism
of these membrane proteins. A complementary set of methods will be applied
centering on biochemical studies probing e.g. mutations. The successful
applicant will work in the Membrane Protein Structural Biology Group, but
will be expected to visit other sites (such as European synchrotron
radiation facilities) occasionally. The assistant professor's duties will
primarily consist of:
* Research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific
communication
* Research leadership of post-docs as well as Ph.D. and Master Students
* Administrative tasks
* Some research-based teaching

*Qualification requirements*
Main emphasis will be put on the applicant´s ability to document original
scientific work at the highest international level within the described
research field. The candidate is further expected to have documented
experience with i) biochemical characterization of different membrane
proteins and ii) state-of-the-art techniques for crystallization of
membrane proteins and evaluation thereof. The intention is that the
candidate shall bridge between these two fields.

Specifically, candidates for the assistant professorship are required to
have:
*Minimum 4-year post-doc experience, preferably from at least two different
laboratories
*Documented experience at an international level in membrane protein
characterization (in solution and in liposomes) with a focus on
understanding molecular mechanisms
*Experience with novel membrane protein crystallization techniques
(including prescreening procedures)
*Shown ability to scientifically bridge between the two above mentioned
research areas
*Documented experience at an international level with several
overproduction systems/methods and multiple chromatographic purification
approaches
*Established scientific collaborations with leading research groups in the
world within the relevant research areas
*The associate professor is also required to be enterprising and to possess
good interpersonal and English language skills. We are seeking for a highly
motivated individual interested in challenging projects.

Furthermore, it is desirable that the candidates have:
*Experience with studies of macromolecular complexes
*Experience with radioactivity based functional assays
*Experience with other structural characterization approaches than X-ray
crystallography
*Experience with work with heavy-metal labeled protein for crystallization
*Experience with novel X-ray data collection procedures (using e.g. pixel
detectors or humidifier)
*Experience with teaching in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology

*Application Procedure:*Apply by clicking "Apply online" below. Please note
that *only online applications will be accepted*.

Applications - in English - must include:
*Application (cover letter) detailing your motivation and background for
applying for this specific position.
*Curriculum vitae
*Diplomas - all relevant certificates
*List of publications and manuscripts (already published work should be
highlighted, also indicate if the work is peer reviewed or reviews)
*Other information for consideration
*Minimum two references and recommendations
*Brief research plan (maximum three pages, please contact Associate
Professor Pontus Gourdon for more information, see contact information
below)

*The closing date for applications is 23.59pm, Sunday the 1st of February
2015*. Applications received later than this date will not be considered.
By the end of February 2015, all applicants will have received information
regarding the evaluation of their application. The applicant will be
assessed according to the Ministerial Order no. 242 of 13 March 2012 on the
Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities. University of Copenhagen
wishes to encourage all interested in this post to apply.

*Terms of employment:*
The terms are set according to the Agreement between the Ministry of
Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other
relevant professional organization. The post is covered by the Job
Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).
