Dear Juniors,

For this week's Scientific Fika we are very excited to have Jonas Enander as a speaker. After completing his PhD thesis on massive gravity at Stockholm University, Jonas currently works as a science communicator and is writing a book about black holes. Join us on Friday the 18th of November at 16:00 for a broader view of astronomy's impact on the world, while enjoying delicious Swedish pastries. We also encourage you to talk to Jonas afterwards about his career path, which presents another avenue for working in science.

Astronomy and colonial conflicts

In 2014, protesters from the indigenous people of Hawai’i blocked the groundbreaking ceremony for the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea. The conflict highlighted how astronomy has a colonial dimension that is still present today. In this talk I will discuss the colonial history of astronomy, as well as current conflicts. After the talk, I invite everyone to have a joint discussion around the question: Does our knowledge of the universe come with a social and moral cost?

Place: NORDITA Floor 6 - Room Mega (in-person only).
Address: AlbaNova University Center, Hannes Alfvéns väg 12
Please put this date in your calendar and come to discuss interesting science.

We're looking forward to seeing you!
Nadia, Guilherme and Nikki
