Ice-shelf damming in the glacial Arctic Ocean: dynamical regimes of a basin-covering kilometre-thick ice shelf

Abstract
Recent geological and geophysical data suggest that a 1 km thick floating ice shelf extended over the entire glacial Arctic Ocean during Marine Isotope Stage 6, about 140 000 years ago. Here, we theoretically analyse the development and equilibrium features of such an ice shelf. Using analogies with the present-day large Antarctic ice shelves, we consider the fundamental question of the stability marine ice sheets, which is a key for the possibility of very rapid sea-level changes resulting from the current global warming or triggered by past glacial-interglacial transitions.
