Dear all,

Please find below information on a course on the ICON Earth System Model, offered by Sebastian Rast / Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology / Hamburg / in July-August this summer. Please register by replying to sebastian.rast at mpimet.mpg.de by filling out the form at the end of the email.

Course description:

ICON contains a general circulation model of the atmosphere and is based on a grid that is derived from the icosahedron. The triangles of the icosahedron are projected onto the surface of the sphere and subdivided further by great circles. This grid is an alternative to the well known longitude-latitude grids. The interesting aspect is that the icosahedral grid does not contain "singular points" such as the poles and that the grid points have similar distances of each other everywhere on the globe.

This full-day course lasts for one week (Monday to Saturday) and offers an introduction to the usage of the ICON model in its atmosphere version including a physics package that was developed for climate science. We will not discuss the underlying physics but we will emphasize the technical aspects, how simulations can be performed with this model and how the code can be modified according to individual needs. The most important data structures inside the model will be discussed and the implementation of a submodel will be demonstrated with the example of a tracer emitted into the atmosphere. The following topics will be discussed in some detail:

-Simple simulation of the general circulation of the atmosphere
(boundary conditions, initial conditions, parameters, namelist
 variables, scripts)

-first evaluations of the results and assessment of the quality of the simulation

-general overview of program structure

-general overview of important data structures inside the code

-implementation of additional submodels, modifications of the existing code

The course consists of lectures (20 hours) and practical exercises on the computer (18 hours). It is meant for persons who would like to work with ICON in their master thesis (in exceptional cases also bachelor thesis), PhD thesis, or in research, and who would like to gain some insight into the technical aspects of the code.

The course will be taught in English.

Information for the students of Uni Hamburg: Please, select the weeks on the "Terminplaner", even if you already registered via STINE. There will be the possibility to get credit points.

People from outside get a certificate, a graded certificate is also possible. In that case, an exam will take place on Saturday.

The Cluster of Excellence "Integrated Climate System Analysis and
Prediction" (CliSAP) is a joint effort of Universität Hamburg and
its partners, supported by the German Research Foundation. CliSAP is
the nucleus of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability
(CEN) and a co-founder of the KlimaCampus Hamburg.

The CEN combines expertise from the natural and social sciences
and unites nine institutes and research centers at Universität Hamburg.
The KlimaCampus Hamburg brings together universities, research
facilities and authorities from across Hamburg in the context of
climate research.
