Postdoctoral researcher
A two-year postdoctoral position is available at Uni BCCS, connected
to the project “eSysbio – an e-science environment for systems
biology”. Uni BCCS is co-located with the University of Bergen (UiB),
and the project is conducted in close collaboration with research
groups at UiB and with the project “Bridging the gap: disclosure,
understanding and exploitation of the genotype-phenotype map” at
Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE), Norwegian University of Life
Sciences. Both projects are funded by the Research Council of Norway,
through the eVITA program for e-science, and run from 2007 to 2012.
The eSysbio project involves a team of researchers, post-doctoral
fellows, PhD-students, programmers, and master students all located at
Uni BCCS and UiB.
Postdoctoral candidate:
The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent (or have submitted a PhD
thesis before the application deadline). Ideally the candidate has a
strong theoretical background and practical experience from
bioinformatics. Candidates with background in software engineering,
data modelling, or mathematical modelling will also be considered. The
candidate’s PhD should ideally be in computer science though we are
also interested in candidates with relevant doctoral degrees in other
fields (e.g., mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology) if they have
extensive experience and proven abilities in programming and software
engineering. Experience from analysis of ultra-high throughput
sequencing (UTS) data and Web services technologies are advantages.
The candidate will work on analysis of UTS data to identify genetic
changes resulting from selection experiments on yeast populations.
These analyses will be performed within the eSysbio-framework, and the
candidate will be responsible for the development of UTS-support in
eSysbio, which will involve adoption of UTS data processing and
analysis tools using appropriate standards. We seek candidates
interested in taking part in student and project supervision.
We expect enthusiasm and independence as well as the ability to work
in a team environment. Good knowledge in English is required. Women in
particular are invited to apply.
The eSysbio project:
The main aim of the project is to develop a collaborative virtual
workspace for entering, analysing and accessing systems biology data.
Users of the system will be researchers from multiple disciplines,
such as molecular biology/biomedicine, statistics and mathematics. The
workspace will be implemented using a Service Oriented Architecture
(SOA), where Web services and semantic technologies will play key
roles. The project is divided into three work packages: 1) Development
of the collaborative virtual workspace; 2) Resource integration (SOA/
Web services/workflows) and semantic technology; and 3) User interface
and client software integration.
Uni BCCS is a department of the research company Uni Research and has
approximately 50 employees counting more than 20 different
nationalities. The centre operates the high performance computing
facilities of the University of Bergen, and has units within high-
performance computing (Parallab), bioinformatics (CBU), and
mathematics (CMU), all involved in the eSysbio project.
Please send the following documents to HR Consultant Monika Voit (monika.voit at uni.no
) with cc to project leader Senior Scientist Dr Pål Puntervoll (pal.puntervoll at uni.no
):

• 1 page description of your research interests
• contact information of two references
Applications which do not include all required documents will not be
considered. It is assumed that we have the candidate’s permission to
contact the references named in the application.
The application deadline is 12th February 2010.
