Postdoctoral fellowship in transcriptome-wide RNA structure analysis

A two-year fellowship is available in the Bioinformatics Group, Department of Molecular Medicine, Aarhus University, Denmark. The position is available to commence September 1, 2011.

On the one hand, next generation sequencing (NGS) has made it possible to experimentally interrogate RNA secondary structure transcriptome-wide. On the other, there is a dramatic increase in the amount of comparative data available for RNA secondary structure prediction. As part of Centre for Applied Transcriptomics (http://rna.binf.ku.dk/), the research focus of this position is to improve the annotation of human RNA structure by integrating the analysis of NGS-based experimental data (FragSeq, etc) and comparative genomics data. Computationally, the focus will likely be on extending existing locally developed phylo-SCFG-based methods.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate is expected to be involved in both the development of computational methods, their application, data analysis, and experimental collaborations. We seek a highly motivated person, capable of working fairly independently.

For consideration, applicants must:

·       Have a PhD in bioinformatics, statistics or a similar field
·       Be experienced in handling and analyzing genomic data
·       Be experienced with programming and be familiar with LINUX/UNIX
·       Have excellent English speaking, reading, and writing skills
·       Have published in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals

Skills of additional interest include:

·       Experience in statistics and probabilistic models/machine learning
·       Experience with RNA secondary structure modeling
·       Ability to program in C++ and Python

Salary and terms of employment:

The  successful applicant will be hired as a postdoctoral fellow for an initial 2-year period. The possibility exists for extension of this initial period. While negotiation for salary supplement is possible, the starting salary level is currently DKK 31.400 a month (approx. US $ 6000) plus contribution to a pension scheme. The conditions of employment are based on the agreement between The Ministry of Finance and The Federation of Graduate Employee Unions. Remuneration will include an additional pension-based bonus of DKK 37.600 (october-97 level). Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they have not lived in Denmark the last 3 years.
