PhD student position in bioinformatics
The call for applications is hereby reopened. Applications received earlier
will be considered when filling the position.

A bioinformatics PhD student position is available at the University of
Eastern Finland, Institute of Biomedicine, Kuopio Campus
(http://www.uef.fi/biolaaketiede), within the group of Sami Heikkinen (PhD,
Docent in Molecular bioinformatics, Academy Research Fellow)

The research topic which the PhD student to be recruited will work on is the
Functional understanding of regulatory SNPs in type 2 diabetes. A wide range
of bioinformatic methods are applied on own and public genome-wide and other
relevant datasets. Close collaboration with local chromatin biology and
human disease genetics groups ensures access to wet-lab experimentation and
large clinical and genetic datasets.

The salary of the PhD student will be placed on levels 1-4 of the job
requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the Salary
System for Finnish Universities. The duration of the position will initially
be up to three years (until the end of 2014), with a possibility for an
extension up to Aug 31, 2016. In an ideal case the position starts on March
1st, 2012.

A person to be appointed to the PhD student position shall hold a suitable
MSc degree (or equivalent). Persons graduating in the immediate future are
also encouraged to apply. Applicants should have an educational background
at least partly in computer science. Hands-on programming skills would
ideally include R and Unix, the main programming environments of the group.
Experience in statistical methods relevant to genetic datasets will be
regarded as a merit.

uef.fi. The deadline for applications is February 13, 2012 (at 3.00 pm
Finnish time).

The application should include
€    A cover letter indicating the position to be applied for
€    A short CV
€    Copies of relevant diplomas and transcripts of academic records. The
diplomas should be in English or Finnish, and the grading system should be
described
€    The names and contact information of two referees, ideally including
the applicant¹s main MSc supervisor
