Closing date: 28 September 2017
Researcher/ senior researcher in genetics of forest trees
The Department of Forest Genetics and Biodiversity (NIBIO) has a vacant permanent position in genetics of forest trees. Genetics is a pillar for our research on forest tree breeding, and we further pursue epigenetics, genetic structure/diversity of species and genetic questions in ecology. NIBIO has a formal collaboration agreement with the Norwegian Forest Seed Station who has the practical responsibility for the national forest tree breeding. In addition, the Department is involved in various administrative management efforts at the European, Nordic and national levels. The position is located at Ås. The position involves some travelling.

NIBIO's activities lie within agriculture, food, climate and the environment. The Institute conducts research and management support, and provides knowledge for use in national preparedness, governmental and district management, industry, and the society at large.

Work tasks and responsibility
A main task for the position is to assist the forest tree breeding with necessary genetic knowledge to ensure continuing development of methods to increase the efficiency and maintain sustainability of tree breeding. Other tasks are to research genetic structure, adaptation and molecular ecology of forest trees for use in gene resource management. The researcher will be responsible for developing proposals and carrying out projects within these fields. The research questions are not limited to tree species. Specifically, the new employee is to work on:
· Genomics and population genetics
· Implementing and developing methods in forest tree breeding based on quantitative and molecular data
· Dissemination for the scientific and forestry community
· Surveys and management task, e.g. in cooperation with the Norwegian Genetic Resource Centre
Professional qualifications
· PhD in genomics/ population genetics, preferably in combination with breeding theory
· In depth experience with molecular laboratory work
· Good publishing rate
· National and international scientific networks
· Experience in developing and leading research projects
· Scandinavian language, persons which do not have Norwegian as mother tongue have to commit themselves to learn written and spoken Norwegian within two years.
Personal qualifications
· High scientific competence and work capacity
· Independent and good cooperation skills
· Interest for interdisciplinary research questions
· Willingness to take on challenges
Salary and benefits
· The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale as Researcher code 1109 (PhD), salary grade 57-72 (NOK 490.900 - 650.200 pr. år) or Research professor code 1183, salary grade 69-75 (NOK 611.700 - 686.900 pr. år), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
· Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which includes a good occupational pension scheme, occupational injury and group life insurance, and low-interest home loans.
General information
· In accordance with the Norwegian Civil Service equal opportunities policy, qualified candidates are encouraged to apply - regardless of age, gender, functional disabilities or national or ethnic background.
· We would like to point out that information about applicants may be subject to public disclosure, in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (Offentlighetsloven), Section 25. About NIBIO
The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) was established 1 July 2015 and is one of Norway's largest research institutes. NIBIO has approximately 700 employees present in all parts of the country. Its main office is located at Ås in Akershus. NIBIO is owned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Division of Forest and Forest resources deals with interdisciplinary research, forest inventories and dissemination to promote science based management and added value of forests. Areas of work include sustainable use and optimal production of forest, surveying forest condition, climatic impacts of forests and forestry, and business development based on forests and forest resources.
The main tasks of Department of Forest Genetics and Biodiversity are to generate and disseminate knowledge relevant for management of biological and genetic diversity of forests, for forest tree breeding, and for climatic adaptation and regeneration of forests. Our research contributes both to improved production of timber and forest based biomass, and to safeguarding biodiversity of forests. The Department therefore works on solutions for grand challenges of our time. We actively contribute in a wide array of projects, inter alia financed by the EU and The Research Council of Norway.
